Journal Entry #10

Out of the four poems that we had to read for class today my favorite was most definitely "Soybeans" by Thomas Alan Orr. This was my favorite because it is rather easy to relate to being from the mid-west and while I have lived in the city my whole life kind of grown up around the agricultural side of things too. It is definitely apparent in South Dakota the whole chewing tobacco, old beat up truck driving, farmers that you run into around the middle of South Dakota. When I read this poem it made me think of a good friend of mine who does some farming on the side, and chews tobacco. I guess it is just easy for me to relate to this one and that is why I enjoyed reading it so much more than the other three poems. It is also weird thinking that someone does not know what soy beans are when you've grown up in this part of the nation. It's like how can they not know what they are, or why would they invest that much money in something that they know so little or even nothing about.
